Global Dive Newsletter - April 2008

Welcome to the April edition of your dive club's newsletter.

And a huge welcome to Andrew Simpson, our new facility manager.

Andrew joins us after a season working up at Tutukaka, where he was spoilt with many hours of amazing diving on his rebreather. Originally hailing from England, Andrew is an experienced instructor and dive store manager. He has dived extensively around the world, favourite dive locations outside of NZ include the wrecks of Scapa Flow and the reefs of North Sulawesi. Other passions include photography where he makes his money to buy "toys".

Dive club meeting

As always the last Monday evening of every month at Global Dive shop here in Westhaven from 6pm onwards.

Dive club meetings are strictly social events - just a BBQ and a few drinks, and chance to chat to some fellow divers looking for dive buddies (or dive buddies with boats). Plus of course there's the monthly guest speaker to inspire you on to great things diving.

This month's dive club meeting is Monday 28 April.

This month's guest speaker

Peter Crab, Marine Biologist and spokes person for New Zealand Underwater Association will be presenting information on the NZ environment, Laws and guidelines, and an up date on the role of the NZUA within our dive community.

New Zealand Underwater represents individuals and recreational groups, actively supporting those concerned with the maintenance, preservation and protection of this unique resource for all creatures and plants who live in it, and those of us fortunate enough to visit it.

Poor Knights liveaboard trips

These trips are awesome value for money. Over the course of the weekend we do up to 7 dives.

  • Saturday - up to 4 dives at the Poor Knights including 1 night dive
  • Sunday - up to 3 dives - one at the Poor Knights and usually 1 wreck dive and 1 coastal dive

Don’t feel experienced enough? We have on hand experienced Divemasters s who will gladly buddy up and dive with you.

Technical and deep divers welcome, Nitrox and 02 available at Global Dive.

We will also be running a PADI Advanced Open Water course on this trip. This gives you free gear hire, free fills, free cylinder and dive computer use, 5 training dives including Deep, Night, Wreck, Navigation, project AWARE and two recreational dives. Most importantly you learn new skills which will enhance your diving and increase your awareness at depth.

All meals and accommodation are included in the price and yes we will be staying the night on the ocean, tucked away in one of many of the sheltered areas the Poor Knights has to offer in a luxury 53-foot catamaran called Pacific Hideaway.

Spearfishing trip

On Saturday 19 April James from Pinnacle Sports (thanks James/JC for the super presentation last club night) is taking us spear fishing. He is supplying his expertise for love, Global is supplying our 6.4 metre Inflatable at the reduced price of $30pp and we are off to spear fish in the Hauraki Gulf.

You do need to pre book and be here at Global at 9am on the day . You must supply own spear gun. No experience necessary.

Urupukapuka Island Diving Weekend – Bay of Islands

Over this weekend we will be doing 6 dives - Rainbow Warrior, Canterbury Wreck, Night Dive, Reef Dive. It is also a chance to do your Advanced Open Water course if you haven't already.

Price includes dives and 1 night shared accommodation. There will be a 8am pickup from Paihia Wharf on the Saturday morning (we suggest people drive up Friday Night). Car pooling may be available). We will probably stay in a backpackers Friday night so budget an extra $20 to $25.

We are operating a surveyed 8.5m rigid inflatable. There are hot drinks and snacks provided on the boat. There are hot showers available at the resort for after your dive, The Island has a licensed bar and restaurant, so you can purchase food, (lunch) from there if you want. Alternatively for dinner we can arrange the option of a BBQ pack – this consists of steak and sausages, 3 prepared salads, bread and condiments for you to cook at your own convenience for $25.00 per pack.
