Global Dive Newsletter - October 2007

Welcome to the October edition of your dive club's newsletter.

The days are definitely getting longer and, ignoring last week's hail, the average temperatures are definitely on the rise.


Dive club meeting

As always the last Monday evening of every month at Global Dive shop here in Westhaven from 6pm onwards.

Dive club meetings are strictly social events - just a BBQ and a few drinks, and chance to chat to some fellow divers looking for dive buddies (or dive buddies with boats). Plus of course there's the monthly guest speaker to inspire you on to great things diving.

This month's dive club meeting is Monday 29 October.

This month's guest speaker

We're fortunate this month to have the legendary Pete Mesley come along once again. This month he's going to enlighten us on the magic of Chuuk Lagoon (formerly known as Truk Lagoon). Chuuk is a wreck diving mecca and there is something there for all levels - open water through to full on trimix and rebreather diving.

And in conjunction with Pete we're in the process of putting together an amazing trip to Chuuk in mid 2008.

The silly season is going to be upon us before you know it, so put these dates in your diary NOW!!!

Note that the December club date is not the last Monday of the month - that would be New Years. In any case, Santa said he's coming again this year so you better be good.

Trips

While you've been consoling yourselves over the rugby, we've been busy planning your summer diving schedule. Further details on each trip follows.

  • 13 October - sinking of HMNZS Canterbury - POSTPONED
  • 20-22 October (Labour long weekend) - Poor Knights, Tutukaka wrecks - $113/day for 2 dives plus $40 for night dives
  • 26 October (Fri) - Night dive Leigh Reef - $75 for 2 dives
  • 28 October - Girls day out (Leigh) - $125 for 2 dives - includes lunch and chocolates :-)
  • 31 October (Wed) - night dive on MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives
  • 3-4 November - MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives (one day) or $160 for 4 dives (2 days)
  • 10-11 November - Tauranga Liveaboard "Willie O" - $360 for up to 6 dives
  • 14 November (Wed) - night dive on MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives
  • 17-18 November - MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives (one day) or $160 for 4 dives (2 days)
  • 28 November (Wed) - night dive on MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives
  • 1-2 December - MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives (one day) or $160 for 4 dives (2 days)
  • 8-9 December - Rainbow Warrior/Cavalli Islands - $130 for 2 dives (one day) or $260 for 4 dives (2 days)
  • 12 December (Wed) - night dive on MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives
  • 15-16 December - MV Global Dive - $80 for 2 dives (one day) or $160 for 4 dives (2 days)

All trip prices exclude equipment hire.

Labour weekend Poor Knights and Tutukaka wrecks

Diving all 3 days of Labour Weekend. Accomodation at the Tutukaka Coast Motor Lodge.

  • Saturday - wreck diving/hunting &/or sport diving at the Knights plus optional night dive
  • Sunday - wreck diving/hunting &/or sport diving at the Knights plus optional night dive
  • Monday - wreck diving &/or sport diving at the Knights.

Rainbow Warrior/Cavalli Islands

When we ran these last summer they were really popular trips. Total of 6 dives including hunt, wreck, deep and night dives. Accommodation at the Matauri Bay holiday park.

MV Global Dive

Our 6 meter rigid hull, inflatable, is ready for exploration; wreck penetration, spear fishing, day & night hunting adventures, deep deco diving for twins &/or rebreather and scenic dive excursions!

As you can see in the schedule, we've set aside dates for adventures aboard MV Global Dive. If you have a location you would like to visit or an activity you would like to partake in (i.e. Hunting Specialty or Spear Fishing on SCUBA or Deep Decompression Diving) please let us know and we will see if we can book it in…

We've also scheduled some local mid-week night dives - perfect for that quick mid-week dive to keep your sanity.

Tauranga Liveaboard "Willie O"

Based in Tauranga, this weekend of diving will include deep, wreck (The Taioma) night and multi-level diving. We will also be catering for the hunter!!! So bring your catch bags and let’s get our quota over the 6 planned dives! There are only 6 spots available on “Willie O” so be in quick.

Trip price $360 (includes meals and accommodation)

$595 Advance Course (all dive gear/equipment, fills, cylinders, dive computer use, PADI Advanced Open Water dive manual and qualification, guided dives, meals and accommodation.)

PLEASE NOTE 3 cylinders PER DIVER will be required.

If you're interested in getting into professional diving, then now's a good time to start. Our first PADI Instructor course will be held in early January 2008, and it's going to be a ripper!

Other happenings

Nitrox fills

Our nitrox stick is now fully operational, so we can now do your nitrox fills up to 40% without you having to have O2 cleaned cylinders.

If that's all gobbledegook to you, then speak to one of the team about doing your Nitrox course and learn how you can significantly extend your non-deco dive times, and get out of the water feeling like a new born spring lamb (instead of a nitrox soaked tired thing).

We've even gone and made up 10 fill Nitrox cards to save you guys some money.

Pool sessions

Try your new equipment such as Exposure suits, Dry suits, BCD’s, Regulators, Twin sets, technical & recreational equipment configurations or simply come to refresh skills and practise!

  • Tuesday 23 October - 6pm-9pm - Newmarket pool
  • Tuesday 6 November - 6pm-9pm - Newmarket pool

Note that if you want to come along or you want to try particular gear you need to pre-book by the day before the session so we can make sure we have the right gear at the pool.

Prices for pool sessions:

  • Bring all your own equipment - $10
  • Own equipment but rent tanks and weights - $20
  • Diver and any equipment over and beyond tanks and weights - $30
