Home / Dive Blog / Global Dive Newsletter – March 2009

Welcome to the March edition of your dive club’s newsletter.

I usually try and kick of the newsletter with an attempt at humour or something light.
Well, this month I’m bucking the trend.
Check out my post on the film Sharkwater.

Remember, more people are killed each year by Christmas tree lights and vending machines than are by sharks.
They are a critical part of the food chain – they control smaller fish numbers, which in turn eat the plankton that turn CO2 into the oxygen we breathe. Kill all the sharks and we’re likely to be next!

Dive club meeting

As always the last Monday evening of every month at Global Dive shop here in Westhaven from 6pm onwards.

Dive club meetings are strictly social events – just a BBQ and a few drinks, and chance to chat to some fellow divers looking for dive buddies (or dive buddies with boats). Plus of course there’s the monthly guest speaker to inspire you on to great things diving.

This month’s dive club meeting is Monday 30 March.

This month we’ve got Pete Mesley back in da house!
Jetsetter, photographer, and all things diving extraordinaire, Pete’s just got back from the West Island where he attended and presented at the OzTec conference.
Pete will be updating us on what’s hot and what’s not in the tech diving world.

Next month’s guest speaker is also a ripper.
We are stoked that Rachel Agnew has agreed to come along and run us through her Sea Our Future programme – a fun and interactive course designed to educate on the importance of marine reserves. You can read more about this outstanding initiative on Rachel’s website – www.seaourfuture.org.nz. More details on this to come, but don’t miss it!

And we are soooooo organised, we’ve even already lined up our guest speaker for May.
Our own Tara Sutherland (we all know her, we all love her) is going to give us the lo down on what it’s like to go through the Divemaster and Instructor courses and to become a dive professional.

Upcoming club dates

* Monday 27 April – Rachel Agnew – Sea Our Future
* Monday 25 May – Tara Sutherland – becoming a “Pro”
* Monday 29 June

Sea Week – Long Bay beach and ocean cleanup a big success!

Thank once again those of you who helped with this very successful cleanup. All in all we had 27 volunteers; 8 divers and 19 walkers. We collected over 35kg of rubbish, of which the vast majority was recyclable, so THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS are in order.

Major thanks to Alex for her significant efforts to pull this event off. Good on you Alex!
