I grew up 10m from the ocean and was frequently lulled to sleep by the sounds of southern right whales playing in the sea across the road from my bedroom window; I spent many hours snorkeling over the reefs near my house looking for them.

When I moved to New Zealand 15 years ago I was broke, so signing up for a diving course and buying all my gear seemed like a great idea! (Visa is indeed a flexible friend.) I was instantly hooked and have been diving ever since.

I started instructing 5-years ago and spent a couple of seasons in Tutukaka (base for the world-famous Poor Knights) before moving to Auckland (base for the world-famous Lake Pupuke

I love sharing my love of diving which is, I guess, why I enjoy instructing so much.
I’m particularly passionate about buoyancy. It makes you look cool in the water and if you look cool, so does your instructor. I like looking cool.

I love travelling to new and exciting places. A good overseas trip usually includes diving.
In addition to NZ, I’ve been lucky enough to have dived in the UK, Africa, Thailand, Mexico and Cuba. The mojitos were best in Cuba.

I love nudibranchs. I love my Canon G11. I’m working on the relationship between the two.
I am slowly progressing as an underwater photographer. I have even had a photo published in Neville Coleman’s nudibranch book. (Although I think this was more due to the fact that it was a rare nudibranch rather than picture quality !)
Andrew is going to sell me a cool strobe, which will make me such a good photographer that I’ll win awards. Can’t wait!

I am the resident Global Dive ‘keeping warm’ expert. You need to keep warm- come and see me.

I grew up in a pool in the backyard where I spent every minute I could and got my first mask and snorkel (hand me down from my big brothers) which led me quite nicely into diving. I have been diving since 1995.

I have dived all over the world – the UK, China, Australia, Greece, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Tonga just to name a few.

I love the ‘hearts and flowers’ style of diving and spend every pleasure dive I can with my camera looking for critters to photogrpah. My ambition for this year is to have a weekends diving with complete and utter control of the camera.

I need lots of help with this one!

I like 25m visibility, starfish and stingrays.
I also like strawberries, popcorn and Mark (from MV Pacific Hideaway’s) Lamb Shanks.

I really enjoy taking new divers out and showing them around some of our shore diving spots.
We have some pretty wicked dives in our area and the easy access is top of the pops.

My other real passion is spending an hour with my face in a wall taking photographs. I want that to be more than an hour though!

This year, I’m looking forward to spending some more time diving with a twin tank setup and thus increasing my hours underwater.

Anna is also going to force me to like Wreck Diving – but then again, she was right about me loving Night Diving and pretty much everything else as well.
And if I admit this online, then maybe she will stop beating me up.

You will be able to recognise me by the spiky hair and smart mouth but also the red OMS BCD and the fancy pants silver and black Slingshot fins OR the tiny twin 10′s that I have taken to diving in everywhere.

I design and maintain the Global Dive website – and our Facebook Fan Page and its usually me that you are talking to via our Twitter account.

I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the world of diving at the ripe old age of 9. Since then I have been in around and underwater as much as possible, and now I have made it a lifestyle. I lived and taught in the Red sea for a year before moving to New Zealand. Other countries I have been privileged to dive include Australia, Mexico, Turkey and a few more.

Tom cave diving in the 'Temple of Doom' Mexico

I enjoy all types of diving from reef to wreck or even sludge diving (and I have done my fair share of that!) but my favorite type of diving is cave diving. This is only a recent hobby but I can see it being on the cards for years to come. Cave diving is not for everyone but the thing that draws my enthusiasm to it is the possibility for true exploration. Caves are one of the last frontiers for mankind, and rightly so. Currently myself and a select few are actively searching for flooded caves in New Zealand with the hope of not only exploration but to grow the diving community’s knowledge of the sport. We have a few spots on the “diveable” list but New Zealand being New Zealand it is a logistical nightmare to get kit in, but don’t worry where there is a will there is a way. P.S does anyone know any good helicopter pilots?

I have just taken up underwater photography mainly so that I can show my non diving friends what excites me about the underwater realm but also for a new challenge.

My goals for the future are to extend my knowledge of almost all types of diving so that my teaching will continue to progress. I am very passionate about the sport and I’d like to make other divers alike.

Will also has not provided any profile information and so it is now being written for him by Anna and Tara – who are well known for making things up.

Will has spent the last few seasons teaching in Tutukaka.
He has made himself at home up there and has bought some land. Which apparently, if you hire a cherry picker – place it in exactly the right area on his property – stand on one leg – hold your tongue in the right position and breathe out (but never hold your breath); you can see the Poor Knights Islands.

Will first went in the water when he was still in the womb – that means he has been diving longer than he has been breathing!

Favourite dive gear is my new camera. i just wish I could remember to put a memory card in it.

Hey there, I am a film and television safety guy that likes to take up every hobby I can think of.

I started diving as part of adding to my qualifications for film and television so that I could work on water jobs and then decided to take it further by doing the dive master course and then couldn’t stop, so went on to become an instructor.

When I get the chance, I enjoy teaching people and seeing them get hooked the way I did.

I love spreading my love for wreck diving around, and getting new divers to delight in the experience of seeing history providing a haven for aquatic life.

I’ve done my bit of travelling and have been able to dive in all sorts of places, and all sorts of conditions.

I am currently working on finishing my specialty instructor training this winter.

Around the shop you’ll see me if you look down; I’m not one of the vertically blessed – and in the water, if you see some bright yellow splitfins attached to a ninja Otter drysuit, that fashion faux pas is definitely me!
