The TDI (Technical Diving International) Intro to Tech course is the perfect course for divers who have heard about technical diving and want to find out more about this exciting branch of advanced recreational diving.

This course walks students through the special techniques, planning procedures and skills that set technical diving apart from traditional sport diving.

It will show them how to improve their dive planning methods, in-water skills and streamline their existing gear configuration, in a non-threatening and fun learning environment.

The specific skills this course will highlight are:

Advanced Buoyancy Control

Gas Management

Situational Awareness

Trim

Gear Configuration and Selection

Many More!

TDI’s Intro to Tech course is a useful stand-alone course for the diver who wants to become a more skilled, more proficient diver regardless of if he intends to move on to technical diving.

The course may also be used as an introduction to the TDI Advanced Nitrox course and the TDI Decompression Procedures course.

And finally, it is also a good refresher for certified technical divers who may want to refresh their skills or have them re-evaluated by a TDI technical instructor.

Andrew has written a Dive Blog entry on the Intro to Tech course and we are pleased to have some dates already scheduled!

I can honestly say the Intro to Tech course is a fantastic idea for anyone interested in extending their dive training. We cover details such as equipment configuration for twins, how twins work, in water buoyancy skills plus more advanced dive planning considerations such as gas management as well as using tables and computers to efficiently plan a dive.

The course is an ideal way to determine whether you wish to extend your diving beyond Sport diving, or simply to improve your skills.

The course is run over two evenings and one weekend. Self study is completed before the first class session, followed by a pool session where we practice the in water skills. The final Open Water dives are then completed on the weekend.

The PADI Enriched Air Diver course is PADI’s most popular specialty scuba diving course, and it’s easy to see why.

Our next Nitrox course will be Wednesday 07 July from 6pm.
Give us a call or come in to reserve your place.

Scuba diving with Enriched Air Nitrox gives you more no decompression dive time.

This means more time underwater, especially on repetitive scuba dives.

The Fun Part

Breathe easy—knowing that you know how to recognize illnesses treatable by emergency oxygen. Being the best buddy you can be means being prepared – especially in a time of need.
What You Learn

You learn how to

* Recognize diving illnesses treatable by emergency oxygen
* Properly setup equipment
* Administer emergency oxygen

The Scuba Gear You Use

Scuba gear is not necessary to take this course.

The Learning Materials You Need

The PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Manual is an important component of PADI’s Emergency Oxygen training program. Before class, you’ll review a step-by-step explanation of when and how to provide emergency oxygen.

You’ll also learn about safety considerations, and how to assemble and disassemble emergency oxygen equipment.

The care-at-a-glance card is a quick reference guide to pack in your gear bag and review in case of an emergency.
To purchase this product, contact us.

Prerequisites

Though suited for divers, this course has no prerequisites and doesn’t include dives, which means it is equally applicable to those who are around divers – boat crew, non-diving buddies, lifeguards, and shore staff. You don’t need any previous CPR or first aid training to take the course.

Your Next Adventure

The Emergency First Response certification, which covers CPR and first aid, pairs perfectly with the Emergency Oxygen Provider course.

You’ll also want to be sure to complete your Rescue Diver and Master Scuba Diver rating to be the best prepared dive buddy around.

If you want to learn to scuba dive, the first step is to do an PADI Open Water Diver course.
Within a few days, you can be enjoying the underwater world. And what could be simpler than learning right in the centre of Auckland!

We run open water dive courses in central Auckland most weeks.
Courses are run in small groups over three weeks, giving plenty of time for you to become comfortable with diving concepts and to master the necessary skills as an open water diver.

There are two course options to choose from:

Option 1 – PADI Open Water course

Training is conducted over a series of classroom and pool sessions, followed by your open-water dives.

Your course includes four open water dives.

It is important that as part of your training you get to dive in a number of different situations, as once you are certified there are many options as to where you can dive. Because of this we conduct two of your open water dives in fresh water (in a local lake) and two in salt water (at a local marine reserve).

The price of this course is $549.

All of your scuba equipment is supplied, but you will need to supply your own snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel and fins).
If you decide to buy a mask/snorkel/fin/boot set from us we will give you 15% discount off your purchase, or you can hire them for the duration of your course for $50!

On completion of your course you will graduate with an internationally recognised PADI Open Water Diver qualification that will enable you to dive the world over.

If you’re busy, or just prefer to study at your own pace, it is now also possible to do the theory part of your open water course online, and join us for the pool and open water dives.

For more information on eLearning – click here

Option 2 – Private PADI Open Water course

If you would prefer to do a private course with your own instructor we can put together a customised training programme to suit your availability.

Fully private course – private instruction with your open water dives conducted in a local lake (2) and at a local marine reserve (2) – NZ$1,299 for 1 person, NZ$749 each for 2-3 people, or NZ$649 each for 4 or more people.

If you prefer we can also run this course off your own boat.

A part private/part group course – private instruction for your theory and pool sessions and then group instruction for your open water dives. Note that in order to do this option the timing of your open water dives must coincide with our normal dive course schedule – NZ$699 for 1-3 people, or NZ$599 for 4 or more people

On completion of your course you will graduate with an internationally recognised PADI Open Water Diver qualification that will enable you to dive the world over.
Before booking any learn to dive course, make sure you have the following questions (on our Frequently Asked Questions page, answered.

The only other additional item is a dive medical (see below) which will cost you the price of a doctor’s visit.

Click here for detailed course information.

Not sure if a full-blown course is for you? Come down to the pool and try scuba with one of our instructors.

Stop putting it off – you know you want to do it!

When I signed up to do these two TDI (Technical diving International) courses conjointly, I was expecting to spend days learning about 100 % oxygen, incorporating lots of redundancy into Dive Plans,

Richie and Pete / Photograph by Rachel Agnew

repeating alot of Dive Physiology in the classroom and doing six dives showing that you can maintain good buoyancy and on each dive deploying a marker buoy (which I had secretly hated doing).

I had heard mixed reports from people who’s advice I respected, telling me that the course was very hard to very simple and not worth doing.

Simply put this was the best course I have done and some of the most rewarding dives I have had without a camera.

Pete’s style of teaching takes you past the scope of the course. It’s not a case of learning something that you can repeat in an exam, but he helped to give a true understanding of the material which led to answering questions that had been in the back of my mind for along time that I did not know how
to ask.

As a photographer I pride myself on good buoyancy, but in the water Pete pushed my skills past a level I thought I could reach, The dives were by know means easy but man were they rewarding, leaving me a much more confident and conscientious diver.

This course may not be suited for everyone, but I would certainly recommend it to everyone who is ready to take the step into Technical Diving or looking for a challenge that will improve their diving skills 100%.

Trip Report by Simon Hutton

I spent last weekend on the live aboard to the Poor Knights aboard Pacific Hideaway with a great bunch of keen divers.

Having only completed my Open Water Course on July 12 and having not been for a dive in the briny due to the weather that weekend, I was excited at the thought of finally getting in and under the ocean. Excited and slightly nervous – nervous in a good way that is.

Alex and Simon in The Gardens / Photograph by Andrew Simpson

I wanted to make the most of the trip and do my Advanced Open Water course at the same time. I was very lucky in the fact that I was the only one doing the AOW that weekend. That meant I got one-on-one instruction from Alexandria.

Anticipation was high on Friday night and I didn’t get much sleep. I think I saw every hour in until others started to stir at around 7am. Conditions for the trip were great. None of the wind that we had been experiencing back in Auckland. About an hour after setting off we arrived at Northern Arch.

After a knowledge review and dive briefing, it was time for my first dive. We suited up, geared up and performed our buddy checks and then made our entry. Being in the sea was a strange sensation at first. Being pushed around by the surge also made it interesting trying to perform fin pivots and the hover.

Simon heads off on his last AOW dive - HMNZS Waikato / Photograph by Andrew Simpson

Second dive was a pleasure dive at Landing Bay pinnacle. This blew me away! I couldn’t believe the fish life here. Hundreds of fish, not too concerned with our intrusion. Big snapper aside, my favourite creature here would have been the banded coral shrimp we found hiding in a hole.

Third dive was navigation at The Gardens. Compass navigation went well. Straight line and reciprocal bearings weren’t a problem. My first attempt at the square went a little awry when I got the wrong bearing on the second or third leg, so ended up performing more of a triangle. I got rather lost on our first natural navigation attempt. I paid more attention on the second attempt and got us back to the starting point safe and sound.

Skipper Mark decided Riko Riko Cave would be us for the night. Most of the group went in outside the cave to swim the entrance at change of light. I admit to feeling slightly nervous the thought of doing a night dive. Once we were in the water I felt fine – relaxed as. Saw a few fish resting and the biggest leatherjacket I have ever laid eyes on! Some of the sponges were interesting as well as the phosphorescence on the walls.

After four dives on Saturday, I was feeling it more than a little. Thought I’d sleep like a log but didn’t sleep well at all. Just too excited about what was to come on Sunday I guess.

Simon on the HMNZS Waikato

Dawn finally arrived and as light began to seep into the cave, we made our departure. Our next destination was Ngaio Rock. This was where I did the deep dive. We settled on the sand at 30m where I then had to complete a couple of tasks which involved a bit of a co-ordination test. I was feeling sweet and thought the task was a piece of cake. That was until I couldn’t find the number 17 on the slate. Then I thought it was a trick until Alex pointed it out to me – Dooh! During the debrief I found out that I hadn’t just been touching my nose in between pointing out the numbers, but also the reg. I didn’t notice. It took me 58 seconds to complete the task at 30m and just over 20 seconds back onboard Pacific Hideaway. I also got both the age and maths equation wrong. At the time I knew my answers were incorrect, but I just thought “Oh well!” and handed the slate back to Alex. That was when I thought, “Wait a minute. Something’s not quiet right here!” I got ‘narked’.

I skipped the next casual dive to conserve a little energy for the dive on HMNZS Waikato on the way back to Tutukaka.

The wreck dive was fantastic! Visibility wasn’t flash and the water was green, which gave the wreck a rather eerie aura.

The trip seemed to come to an end as quickly as it had begun. It was a fantastic weekend! Great company, Mark and Pete were fantastic hosts, the food was great – especially the legendary lamb shanks I had heard so much about. Big thanks to Alex for being a fantastic instructor over the weekend. I learnt heaps!

It’s now Wednesday and I am still buzzing. Have got the silly grin I was carrying around all Monday under control finally.
